Some of my favorite childhood memories are of weekends spent walking at my father’s heels through the hospital halls as he made his rounds and checked on his patients. My father was a general practitioner in San Francisco at a time before hospitalists became commonplace, when physicians often cared for the same patients and families for decades and through many stages of life. His relationship with his patients didn’t stop at the office door. He cared for them in the hospital when they were admitted and made house calls when they needed care at home.

I would follow along with my father as he checked on patients he had often known for years. And wherever we went, he seemed to know someone. He would stop to say hello and always take the time to introduce me, whether it was a patient, a colleague, or someone we simply passed in the hallway. No one seemed invisible to him. I watched the way he spoke with people and, perhaps more importantly, the way he listened to them.
After rounds, we would head to the hospital cafeteria for a big hamburger—which, as a child, I thought was the best part of the day. Reflecting now, I realize the real gift wasn’t the hamburger. It was having the chance to watch my father show me, long before I understood medicine, that caring for someone meant seeing the person, not just the patient.
Decades later, that lesson still guides me.
